We all know that aging brings challenges, but dwelling on things that we can’t control can prevent us from enjoying the present. Shifting our focus to what we can control is important, and adopting a mindful approach as we age can help us live joyful and fulfilling lives. To be mindful is to accept reality, embrace the present, and remain open to growth.
Studies show that older adults who practice mindful aging experience more positive emotions, with less fear and regret. If we approach aging with a positive mindset, aging can even offer freedom and new opportunities for us.
Let go as you age. We often hold onto things that no longer serve us, from bad memories to toxic relationships. Letting go of these emotional burdens allows room for new experiences and growth. You can try journaling to be able to process and release baggage.
Visualize the years ahead. Envision your ideal life and write it down. To get closer to your vision, take baby steps toward your dream. But remember to do only what you can and to try and make it a joyful process.
Listen to your body. Many changes happen to our bodies as we age—learn to accept them gracefully. Stay active to maintain your strength and health and to boost your mood and energy. Try gentle exercises like yoga, tai chi or qigong to improve flexibility, circulation, and mental clarity. Eat healthy and look for natural ways to manage your health issues, if any.
Create for health. Creative activities like painting, writing, photography, filmmaking, cooking, sewing, etc. can help ground you in the present moment while making something beautiful with your hands. A study found that older adults who took a painting class experienced increased brain benefits, including greater psychological resilience.
Meditate. Also, work on your inner well-being and focus on joy, peace, love, and other positive emotions. Meditation and prayer can help reduce stress and anxiety. Meditation can help us maintain emotional well-being as we meet the challenges of aging. If we can nurture positive emotions, we might even experience improved health.
Stay positive. Negative thoughts like “I can’t do __ because I’m old,” or “No one needs me anymore” should be banished. Don’t construct boundaries as to what you can or can’t do. Instead, welcome new experiences and focus on achieving new goals.
Don’t set limitations for yourself. Find something you’re passionate about and devote more time to it. Traveling, volunteering, learning a new language, or going back to school (Yes, why not?!) are just some of the things you can do at any age. Always remember: You are never too old to try something new.
